It’s no secret that Intel’s Atom chips are a bit on the slow side. While we certainly like the battery efficiency, a bit more power would be great. It appears Intel is willing to appease us, and the announcement may come on Monday. Intel is expected to introduce the Pine Trail based Atom N470, which will be nearly the same as the N450, but clocked at 1.83GHz instead of 1.66GHz. We also heard a while back that the N470 netbooks would be allowed double the memory of the N450 units. We’ll have to wait until Monday to see if that’s still the case. It’s not a lot, but with Atom right at the edge of usability, every little bit helps. Read the rest of this entry »

Just the other day when the naming scheme for the new Nvidia Fermi cards was announced, we speculated that supply would be very low at launch. As such prices could be high. Now we’re hearing that is likely the case. Sources in the graphics manufacturing market have indicated that the new GTX 470 and 480 will be in very short supply at launch. In fact, the cards may only be available through select companies close to Nvidia. This may mean that only companies that do not sell AMD parts will have access to the GF100 cores at launch.

As for price, Nvidia is said to be aiming for numbers well above AMD’s current line. The GTX 470 may retail for $499, and the GTX 480 could go for an eye-popping $680 at launch. For perspective, AMD’s Radeon HD 5970 dual GPU card tops out at only $599. Read the rest of this entry »

While everyone’s attention is focused on Fermi — Nvidia’s next-gen architecture slated to ship on March 26th — the graphics chip maker has quietly slipped a handful of entry-level GeForce 300 series videocards into its OEM lineup.

News and rumor site Fudzilla reckons these will likely be rebranded parts based on the company’s GT21x 40nm family, starting with the GeForce GT 320. This card will come equipped with 72 processing cores with the GPU, Shaders, and 1GB of memory clocked at 540MHz, 1302MHz, and 790MHz, respectively.

Sitting one step up on the totem pole is the GeForce 330. According to Nvidia’s product page, you can expect this one to ship with 96 or 112 processing cores. Nvidia also specs this one with a 128-bit, 192-bit, or 256-bit memory bus interface. Read the rest of this entry »

I’ve spoken of the wonders of Chrome’s Google Mail Checker Plus extension before.  If you missed the memo, here’s a quick hit: Mail Checker Plus drops a little icon next to your address bar that gives you a frequent update as to how many unread messages are in your Gmail account.  You’d think that was it, given the simplicity of what said extension has to do.  However, Google Mail Checker Plus dumps a ton of options into your lap for complete and total customization of this little icon and its functionality, including the ability to drop a preview window that gives you a quick glance as to what said emails actually are, as well as complete color controls and “always-on” SSL connectivity.

Great, eh?  But frequent users of Google’s services will note that there’s more than just Gmail to worry about.  What’s going on in your Google Reader feed?  Any new messages come through Google Voice?  What the heck is Wave and how many unread messages do you have on your watery messaging service?
